This is one of the most common searches around Anthropic's product line: Claude API versus Claude Pro (or Max, or Team). They sound like tiers of the same thing. They aren't — they're two different products that share a model and a company. Here's the frame that actually helps you choose.
What each one actually is
- Claude Pro / Max / Team / Enterprise — a consumer subscription for chatting with Claude in a browser (claude.ai) and desktop app. Flat monthly fee, generous usage cap, no code required. Pro is $20/mo per person, Max is $100 or $200 for higher caps, Team is $30/user/mo for shared workspaces, Enterprise is custom.
- Claude API — a developer surface at api.anthropic.com. You get an API key, pay pay-as-you-go per token, and call Claude from your code, from other tools, from scripts, from automation platforms. No browser UI. No monthly fee.
The rule of thumb
If you or your team need Claude in your workflow — inside a product you're shipping, inside an automation that fires from another tool, inside a code editor, inside a chatbot for customers — you need the API. If you just want to talk to Claude in a browser about ideas, documents, coding tasks, or research, you want a subscription.
Most professional users end up paying for both: a Pro subscription for personal browser use (the reading, drafting, and coding-in-Claude-Code workflow) and API access for the workflows they've built inside their product. The two aren't substitutes for each other — the browser experience isn't something you can rebuild through the API, and the automation surface isn't something a chat subscription provides.
Cost, side by side
- Pro: $20/mo flat. Effectively unlimited casual use in the browser. If you use Claude in a browser more than an hour a day, this is the cheapest way.
- Max: $100/mo or $200/mo. Same UI, 5x or 20x the daily usage cap. For heavy in-browser use — long research sessions, running Claude Code all day.
- Team: $30/user/mo, minimum 5 seats. Shared projects and admin. Best for organizations where more than five people use Claude in the browser regularly.
- API: pay per million tokens. Haiku 4.5 $1/$5, Sonnet 5 $2/$10, Opus 5 $5/$25, Fable 5/5.1 $10/$50 (input/output per 1M tokens). No monthly floor.
When you want just the subscription
- You're a solo user reading, drafting, and coding in a browser or desktop app. Pro at $20 pays for itself in the first day of use.
- You want Claude Code (Anthropic's coding agent CLI). It's included with Pro/Max/Team subscriptions.
- Your team all uses Claude for chat and shared drafting. Team gets you a shared workspace and admin.
- You don't want to think about token costs. The subscription's flat fee removes the meter.
When you want just the API
- You're building a product that has Claude inside it. There's no other way to do this — API only.
- You're powering an automation (Zapier, Make, n8n, Pilotran, custom script). Automations don't drive a browser session.
- You want per-request usage under $10/month. Pay-as-you-go is cheaper than a $20 subscription at that scale.
- You need a specific model version (Fable 5.1, Opus 4.8) that the browser product doesn't expose.
Where automation platforms fit
Automation platforms — Zapier, Make, n8n, Gumloop, Relay, Pilotran — sit on top of the API. They give you a UI to build workflows that call Claude, connect it to your other tools, and run on a schedule. Some of them resell the API access with markup; some let you bring your own Anthropic key and pay Anthropic direct.
If you're going to run more than a handful of Claude requests a month through automation, the difference between a marked-up platform and a bring-your-own-key one is significant. A workflow firing 500 times a month with Opus 5 calls can be $30 on BYO-key or $150 on a platform that marks up API usage 5x. The platform subscription itself is the same either way — the difference is in the variable AI surcharge on top.
